Green Dresses

Lately, I haven't found much to get super excited about at J.Crew, but when I saw the new Madelene dress, I knew it would be mine. If it makes it to sale, with an extra percent off. I love bright colors, and a fun dress that is work appropriate is always a win in my book. For some reason, J.Crew now designs most of their suiting dresses to fall above the knee. Why, I have no idea.... because I'm thinking that if your office is formal enough to wear a suiting dress, it is probably also formal enough to require knee length hems!

So I haven't really bought many suiting dresses since 2009 for this reason. The Madelene is not just long, it is loud and it is different, so for me it is perfect.

J.Crew Madelene Dress
I ordered it to try out since it makes the model look pregnant and could be a disaster. Happily, I found that it is not and that I actually really love it!

It hits me about where it hits the model... just below my knees.

As an added bonus, I don't look as pregnant as the model! It does float away from the body but I didn't mind it at all. I actually think it is pretty flattering! This is my normal size and I think I might even size down. It was a bit loose at the waist.

Here is a picture showing the color. It is exactly the color I expected. I show it here with a jackie from Fall 2008 in a kelly green, which is how I'd describe the color of the dress. They are almost an exact match. The fabric is a nice mid weight wool that is not at all itchy.

The Madelene gets two thumbs up from me.

Apparently I really like the color green, because I have another green dress to show you! This one has been around for quite a few months, but I don't recall seeing any detailed reviews of it.

Clea Dress in vermont pine
I wanted this one as soon as it came out. The Teddie dress was a total failure on me... too short, and the waist hit so high it looked like a child's dress. I thought maybe the Clea, which is similar in style but longer, would work. It does... sort of.

Unfortunately, it does suffer from too-high waist syndrome. I almost always have this problem with fitted dresses, but it isn't terrible in this dress and I am keeping it. It is also shorter on me than on the model, who is presumably roughly the same height as me. As far as sizing, I had to size up in this one. The sleeves, bust and waist are very fitted and my normal size would never fit.

Here is a picture showing the true color as well as the heavy duty back zip. I like it; it is very easy to zip and feels sturdy. Nothing ruins a nice dress like a cheap zipper.

I love both of these dresses and they totally fit into my quirky wardrobe. What do you think?

  1. Thanks for the reviews. I really like the Clea Dress on you. Would you mind commenting on what size you took and what size/height you are?

  2. Hi OperaRach! I am usually a 6, and am about 5'9ish. A 6 in the Clea (and the Teddie, actually) was just not doable for me. The Madelene is a 6 and it is almost too big. Their sizing is so inconsistent!

  3. Thanks so much for reviewing the Madelene! I'm grateful, too, that OperaRach asked about your own sizing. Like you, I'm smitten with this dress.

  5. Yay, thanks so much for the reviews! I wasn't sure about this one, but I really adore that bright green color and it looks quite flattering. If I hemmed it up an inch, do you think it would ruin the whole thing? I really like the Clea on you as well, and would have liked to have tried this on before final sale. Good to know it runs a touch small.

  6. Hi J.CrewJD! You have a blog, yay! Thank's for the reviews, I was curious about both dresses. And, even better, you are the same size, although I am shorter.
Your side view shots are amazing, I can never get them looking half way decent.

  7. kikki cee, isn't it lovely? This dress is a good example of why many of us can't get enough J.Crew!

hi fred, thank you! I hope you are enjoying your tropical vacation. I'm a little jealous!

shopwithm, you're welcome! I actually think hemming it up would be a good thing. It could easily look dowdy at this length. Even better, there is no vent or anything so it would be an easy thing to do.

Hi ajc, thank you, you gave me the courage to start a blog after you finally did too! If only you could see all of the blooper pictures that I didn't post...

  8. You don't look remotely pregnant in the Madelene. You can tell by the style it's a loose dress. The color really makes it too. Both dresses look nice on you. Regarding the Clea, I think higher waisted dresses can be very flattering to most figures, and need to be somewhat fitted or can end up looking like maternity wear. Think of all those high waisted, float camis.)

I tried the Teddie dress in a 6 and felt like I needed a 10! It was tight!!

Looking forward to more reviews on your blog. :)

  9. JustVisiting, I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who felt a little ridiculous in the Teddie! And you are so right about the high waisted dresses. I have some of the flowier ones and I tend to wear them because they do look a little maternity-ish!

  10. Wow, the colour of that Madalene dress is amazing. I too was worried about the pregnancy bump it was giving the model but it will be a comfy dress to wear during the day, I'm tired of sucking my belly in all the time.

  11. Hi Tabitha! Isn't it gorgeous? I am totally with you... sick of always wearing fitted dresses and having to suck it in. So not comfortable. The Madelene is very comfortable and flattering no matter how much you've eaten that day!

  12. I'm so happy that you are posting reviews. We are exactly the same size and shape ( which could be bad if we're both stalking the same eBay item). I love the Clea dress on you, the Madeleine is gorgeous as well, but seems a little frumpy, definitely needs heels, something to jazz it up. Thanks again!

  13. Robin, I hope we never bid against each other, LOL! I am glad my reviews are helpful for you! I agree that the Madelene is totally borderline frumpy, it begs for accessories and a nice pair of heels! I hope it makes it to sale so I can try it again.

  14. I officially ordered the Madelene after seeing it on you. Love! I was intrigued but wasn't sure how it would work on me. Luckily we're the same height and close to the same build. Can't wait to pair it with some fun heels.

  16. Hello, I love the Madalene dress and thinking about ordering one. I am debating between size 6 and 8 and wondering if you could share with me the measurement of your dress when laid flat please? I would really appreciate if you could help :) thanks in advance..

    1. Hi Emily, I will do that for you when I get a chance. I am not sure if I mentioned this in my review but I did feel like I could have sized down from a 6 to a 4, which I normally don't do in fitted dresses.

  17. Hello! thanks for the response. I love Jcrew dresses but always have problem with the bust area, Jcrew is not busty-friendly! Madelene dress fits you so well...I also Clea dress looks good on you too, so figure flattering. Love the green color :)
